The usual fixes are worse than the problem: split it evenly and let the soup person quietly pay for the steak, or pass a phone calculator around the table while the ice melts. There is a fairer way, and it takes about two minutes.
Why “just split it evenly” goes wrong
An even split is fair exactly once: when everyone ordered the same thing. The rest of the time it tilts the table. Soup-and-water pays for steak-and-two-beers, nobody says anything, and that silence is the real cost. Overpaying twenty dollars at dinner is how “let’s do this again” turns into “I’m busy that week”.
Splitting by item fixes it. Each person owes what they ordered, plus their share of whatever was shared, plus their share of tax and tip. It sounds like homework. It is not, if the receipt does the typing.
Tax and tip: proportional or even?
Tax is easy. The restaurant already charged it in proportion to what each person ordered, so split it the same way: if your food was a quarter of the subtotal, you cover a quarter of the tax.
Tip is where tables argue. A service charge printed as a rate is like tax: it follows each person’s food, and The One Bill applies both automatically. A tip you write in as a flat amount is different. It shows up as its own line, so tap everyone who is in on it and it splits between them. That is the one place we think an even split is fine: a tip is a thank-you, not an order. Rounding up for the friend who charmed the server is between you and your conscience.
Shared plates: the appetizer problem
Three of six people split the nachos. The other three did not touch them (they said). The nachos are $18, so the three who shared them each take $6, and the appetizer disappears from everyone else’s total. The same rule covers a shared bottle of wine, a dessert with four forks in it, or the bread basket that turned out to have a price.
